Our Work

UCEA is the voice of HE employers on pay and reward. We strive to get the best deal for staff, students and the sector by leading collective negotiations on behalf of some 140 HE institutions (of our 169 members), through the New Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES). On 1 August 2024 UCEA took over the role of USS employer representative from UUK; we also represent HE employers in the Teachers' Pension Scheme and the Local Government Pension Scheme, and provide support for institutions that participate in the NHS Pension Scheme. In addition we offer support to those HEIs with their own Self-Administered Trust (SAT) or the Superannuation Arrangements for the University of London (SAUL) or that offer a Defined Contribution scheme to their staff.

UCEA is the voice of HE on workforce policy and legislation. We advocate for HE employers and use our policy expertise to engage with and influence government at a UK and devolved level. We build relationships and foster constructive dialogue on the workforce challenges facing the sector. UCEA research and analysis assists members to understand key workforce trends, including recruitment and retention, sickness absence, pay benchmarking and wider economic comparators, as well as the complexity of the intersection of the ethnicity and gender pay gaps. Our events programme provides important opportunities for knowledge sharing and thought leadership across the sector and our communications team provides individual support to employers and as well as a collective voice on behalf of the sector.

UCEA is the voice on employment practice in HE, supporting institutions through timely, high quality information, advice, guidance, training and development. We share good practice and support to our members on a range of employment policy matters, from immigration to health and wellbeing. We also provide information on pensions tax and alternative remuneration, the statutory pensions frameworks for employers and support members running their own Self-Administered Trusts or participating in SAUL.
