Essentials of employment law

Essentials of employment law is a lively and highly interactive two-part online workshop on Wednesday 5 and Wednesday 12 May. It is aimed at HR team members who have limited knowledge of UK employment law or other managers who wish to gain this knowledge.
The workshop uses real-life case studies largely based on examples from the Higher Education sector to give participants an understanding of the principles and main provisions of employment law and provides practical advice in applying the law. Where relevant, Covid-19 related considerations will be woven into the material.

The workshop will combine PowerPoint presentations with a wide variety of practical case studies, quizzes and polls to ensure inter-action and engagement. There will be the opportunity to raise queries and share experiences with an expert legal tutor and with fellow participants from the HE sector.

Part 1 on Wednesday 5 May will cover:

  • An introduction to employment rights; some employment law ‘urban myths'(!).
  • Contracts of employment (formation, implied terms, breaches of contract, changing contracts).
  • Discipline and dismissal; rights of representation; constructive dismissal.
  • Equalities/equal opportunities: who is protected?; direct and indirect discriminations; new developments on philosophical belief.
  • Flexible working requests, bullying and harassment; disability and reasonable adjustments; equal pay.

Part 2 on Wednesday 12 May will cover:

  • Redundancy and reorganisation: consultations, selection criteria, processes and pitfalls.
  • TUPE; fixed-term and part-time workers’ rights; time-off rights; ill-health and investigations.
  • Collective rights; trade unions and recognition; industrial action. Vicarious liability.
  • Current and future developments: Covid-19, homeworking, Brexit, the government’s future plans; Settlement Agreements.
